Our Local Global Leader

A few hours ago, I was seated at my desk for a good 10 minutes, pondering over the perfect beginning I could have to describe the north trip. Luckily, another topic (of substance) has come by and helped me evade my duty.

Moser Baer, an Indian firm founded in 1983, is currently ranked no. 1 in the country for its data storage products. A more significant punchline (and fact!) states that it is now amongst the top 3 such manufacturers worldwide. Superb. After having started production with floppy diskettes, it then moved on to CD-R's in 1999 and went a step further in making CD-RW in the year 2000.
2003 saw four milestones for the company --

  1. Entry into the DVD-R format
  2. Introduction of the 'moserbaer' brand in the Indian market
  3. Largest ever Indian manufacturing deal with Imation Corp., USA
  4. Commissioning of the world's single largest optical media production facility in Greater Nodia.
The coming years saw a tie-up with HP in branding and distributing their storage media not only in India but also the SAARC region. MB is also a contributing member to the Blu-Ray Disc Association. Lastly, it was labeled a Superbrand for the year 2006-2007.

Now that was some good gyaan wasn't it? My parents returned from the mall today, with a DVD in one of the carry bags. Jab We Met. Yup, a purchased DVD. For Rs.50. I grabbed it and flipped it over to see the backside. A Moserbaer product.

To curb piracy and promote the interests of the entertainment industry, Moserbaer has clearly formulated a classic strategy by tying up with relevant entities. I'm told the maximum price for all the latest DVD's was marked at Rs.150. And to think that we all knew DVD's were at a minimum of Rs.500.

3 cheers for the fall of piracy. (and another 3 cheers for apna moserbaer)

Moser Baer - The name hardly sounds Indian in the 1st place. Yes, what really sets Moser Baer appart is the tie up with movie ppl to provide cheap VCDs/DVDs. Its kind of a pioneer breakthru, at least in the Indian market. More ppl get to own a DVD and piracy is still curbed.
