Thats where it all started.
As Tarantino put it during the Grammy's 2005 ...
"Three punks from the Bay area popped into our lives in a BIG LOUD WAY."
Ever since they started back in 1989, Green Day has been bold with their sound transitions. Most people don't know about past records which confirms the band's widespread popularity and subsequently, a broader fanbase after the last album - American Idiot.
In my opinion, the first album - 1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours (1989) has not got its worth. Agreed, a lot of the songs are about infatuation and college life but no one can deny the free flowing tunes that Billie and the rest have instilled in our heads. Even the sweet solo's that defy the punk rock attributes make you come back for another listen. Of course, the fact that the recording was done in 2 days flat does have a say on the sound quality. But then, they spent just a measly $1000 and sold 10,000 copies. That was a big number in 1989, I've heard bands sold only around 2000 under the same label.
But Dookie (1994) will always be a smash hit. The classic record amongst the lot. By far. Hard hitting openers like Burnout will always cast a top vote pronto. The bassline for Long View is one of the very best I've heard for ANY song - tooo catchy. Basket Case and When I Come Around didn't grab their share of radio space for nothing. An approval stamp of 10 million copies.
Jumping to the present .... American Idiot is no doubt a successful venture by the band. The stats speak for themselves - a whopping 11 million. Green Day has also made it to the Forbes list of Music's Top Ten Money Makers of 2005. They stand at 4th position. At the same time, I do get the feeling that this is their peak.
And just like Jerry Seinfeld pulled out at the right time, so should the boys from the Bay area.

ha green day good band they shouldnt pull out now maybe after a few more years
i like the green hair
Yup,
Dookie is good. I found that out courtesy yours truly.
Liked F.O.D, Emenius among the others. But the rest all found them to be too similar.
In my opinion American Idiot was some cutting stuff. Real good music. Different style in all the songs. Neat touch.
GreenLoco all
Cheers
Amol...green day?? seriously?? green day?
they suck
they are some cheap watered down version playing some lame ass riffs in their otherwise completely pop album of crap.
besides, it's been seven years. get over it.
[janine by the way]
1. Pull out now...? Last thing I thot i'll hear from u, Amol...
2. "they suck
they are some cheap watered down version playing some lame ass riffs in their otherwise completely pop album of crap"
Woh...I wonder wot Amol has 2 say bout that...i for one am not so sure wot is written above bout Green Day is newhere near accurate...infact...i think wots WRITTEN IS CRAP...!
Jan - I love the ol' Green Day. Always will. Call AI pop.. or whatever. It's a bold move all the same. Try listening to album properly re. I admired the idea behind the record. Neway dude.. its a matter of opinion!
Leo - Been 7 years since what? You have some bands you really like. So do I. Simple.
Mrinal - Yup.. they've reached where they wanted to I guess. Strongly feel shelving it is best. I can't vouch for an attempt bolder and bigger than AI. Then again.. let them surprise me.
listen amol [and mrinal] you cant deny green day has sold out from its original punk roots.
their new album is completely and totally soft and catering to the largest market which is pop.
its become barely better than britney spears now. they have 3 punk riffs in each of their 'catchy' songs and in an otherwise pop album
I'm not denying its not successful but then so are a lot of boy-bands
I love the way Mrinal defends Amol
yes me too
Hey amol. how do you put a profile picture on your blog?

Haha.. I never denied that GD is looking a little different now.. even if it's negative. Like I said in the beginning..
"I love the ol' Green Day."
