Orkut was the revolutionary breakthrough model in social networking sites. At least the one that became an instant hit amongst the young crowd in India. 15.33% of Orkut's customer base is of Indian origin. That's second to the Brazilian bunch. The total customer base as of Feb 2007 is about 44 million.
Like many others, I started with Orkut too. It was captivating to say the least. You could see common friends, find people by hobbies or interests and even have endless messages from morons who requested 'doing fraandship'. But the craze didn't last. Ok fine.. you could go on adding people and all that sorta thing but you could never 'control' the access to your profile. Right to privacy. Something as simple as that had been overlooked. Silly Orkut. But remember that Orkut is the 2nd most visited site in India.
Then one fine day a big bang - in the form of immense coverage for this new service called Facebook hit all newspapers and business magazines. People found it a little tricky to use at first, but they never looked back after that.
Recently and reluctantly I joined Facebook. In only a day's membership, I had found a score of my friends from HongKong. It's been 11 years since I last heard from them. And Facebook did it all. I dont know how. I don't care. I'm damn happy it worked wonders.
A special mention and a BIG thank you to T.S. , who convinced me to book my face in this book.
