BEST Of Both Worlds

Today I got a taste of the two features introduced not too long ago by the Brihanmumbai fellas.

#1 PCO

I read about this in the papers a couple of months back. People had grimaced at the thought of a calling facility positioned (quite strategically) at the front of the bus, on the grill behind the driver's seat. For one, you'd have to make your way through two dozen people, gripping rods above and shoving yourself past healthy, grumpy and sweat infested travelers. Now, if you ever made it to the PCO itself, consider the thought of yelling into the mouthpiece in the midst of a Milan subway gridlock with decibel levels soaring. To make matters worse, by the time you get to the PCO your stop is next up. Perfect. Although one can say that in non peak hours, the facility could prove useful.

#2 Starbus

Alright alright.. I know it's at least a year old but I never required a bus that had a Starbus to its name. Today I had the opportunity to use a bus going towards home and so I hopped in. With the introduction of a one step entry into the bus, hopping on is less tedious for the elderly or anyone physically handicapped. Good. 1/3rd of the bus is at a higher level than the rest while the majority is just a foot or two above the ground. The higher level is situated at the back of the bus. Windows are a big improvement. The low level area provides an incentive to increase the window area, thereby allowing better ventilation and circulation of air. Good move. In the old BEST's, only the seated passengers had the benefit of the breeze. Now it's a bit of a trade-off. Sit comfortably or stand against the inflow. Oh yes, don't forget the radio that's playing in the background. The exit is more or less used for the exit purpose only as is the entry door, which is hydraulically manoeuvered. A little slow to react though.
